This Memorial Day Weekend, pack the kids in the car, along with your swimsuits (and plenty of sunscreen!) and head over to Treasure Island Beach, Florida, the site of “Bands on the Sand.” Featuring bands from all musical genres including 80s, southern rock, blues, country, reggae, and classics, this family-friendly annual musical event is free to the public, and gets bigger and bigger every year.

The event includes arts and crafts, a playground for the kids, food and drink, and a fireworks show at 10 pm. It’s held just behind the Bilmar Resort in Treasure Island. Get there early so you can enjoy the best seating possible, and more importantly, so you can soak up the incredible Florida beach weather during the month of May. You can make a whole day out of the event with bands playing for 11 straight hours.

If you’re traveling without the kids, you can hop on over to St. Pete Beach for a Memorial Day Weekend Pub Crawl, which sends bar-hoppers up and down the beach in a relentless pursuit of the beach’s best beer. Or if you’re content with staying in one spot and don’t mind large crowds, try Caddy’s on Sunset Beach, right between Treasure Island and St. Pete Beach. Caddy’s is also more of 21 and up crowd, but for those who are looking for that type of scene, there is always lots of great music and more.

For those looking to travel to the area by boat, you can dock it at John’s Pass Marina in Madeira Beach, just outside of Treasure Island. There you can check out Gators, one of the area’s most popular beach bars on the water, and home to one of the bigger Memorial Day Weekend gatherings. The drinks are nice and cold and the food is great. Gators is always one of the most popular beach bars in the area.

Whether you plan to have some family fun in the sun at “Bands on the Sand” or want to enjoy festivities for a more mature crowd, be sure to make reservations for accommodations early. Hotel rooms fill up very fast. In fact many of the luxury resorts on St. Pete Beach tend to hike up their prices for Memorial Day Weekend and other holidays. For that reason, you may want to look into staying in a Treasure Island Condo or Treasure Island Hotel – the area is less expensive than St. Pete Beach and offers an affordable way to enjoy Pinellas’ beautiful beaches.
